                <p>Augusta Jordan asks for aid on behalf of Eveline Stuart, an African-American
                    woman living in Staunton. Her husband James, living in Ohio, is afraid to return
                    to Staunton because he served as a Union guide during the war, and wishes to
                    bring Eveline to Ohio.</p>

                <p>Will the Freedmen's Bureau afford aid to a colored woman in Staunton, <abbr
                        expan="Virginia">Va.</abbr> that she may join her husband in Ironton,
                    Lawrence <abbr expan="County">Co</abbr> Ohio.</p>

                <p>The husband, James Stuart, was forcibly taken from home and family to act as
                    guide to our forces upon the Lynchburg raid, he having lived in the county and
                    being familiar with the locality. He did good service as guide for six weeks,
                    for which he has never been remunerated by the government. He is now afraid to
                    return to <abbr expan="Virginia">Va.</abbr> as it was known in Staunton he acted
                    as guide through Tye River Gap at the Lynchburg raid.</p>

                <p>James Stuart has money to defray her expenses to Ohio if the Bureau will aid her
                    in her arrangements and journey.</p>

                <p>Edward Jordan, Solicitor, Treasury Depart- <pb n="2"/>ment will vouch for the
                    money being refunded to the Bureau if any assurance of the kind is necessary.</p>

                <p>The address of the woman, Mrs. Eveline Stuart, Staunton, <abbr expan="Virginia"
                        >Va</abbr>.</p>

                <p>The man, James Stuart, Ironton, Ohio.</p>

                <p>If you will give this case attention you will oblige.</p>
