                    friends and family in camp. He also shares some rumors of the Union occupation
                    of Alexandria, and says that every member of the Augusta Grays who voted in the
                    recent elections voted in favor of secession.</p>

                <p>It is with pleasure to <hi rend="underline">me</hi>, that I am permitted to write
                    you a <orig reg="few">fiew</orig> lines I <orig reg="received">recieved</orig>
                    your much welcomed letter a <orig reg="few">fiew</orig> days since and have
                    taken this highly favored opportunity of writing. My health is very good as well
                    as your Brothers and I hope when <orig reg="these">theese</orig>
                    <orig reg="few">fiew</orig> lines comes to hand that you may be enjoying the
                    same blessing with all other earthly enjoyments. <orig reg="There">Thare</orig>
                    are from fifteen to twenty thousand Soldiers <orig reg="here">hear</orig> at
                    present <orig reg="there">thare</orig> was <pb n="2"/> some <orig reg="rumors"
                        >rumers</orig>
                    <orig reg="here">hear</orig> last night that the federal troops had taken <orig
                        reg="possession">posession</orig> of Alexandria <orig reg="there"
                    >thare</orig> was a secession flag <orig reg="there">thare</orig> &amp; one
                    secessionist stood by it &amp; said the first man that attempted to take it
                    down he would kill &amp; one of the officers of the federal troops walked up
                    to it and took hold of it and was shot down in his tracks <orig reg="but"
                    >put</orig> the secessionist suffered the same fate he was shot down &amp;
                    cut to <orig reg="pieces">pieases</orig> he well knew what would be his fate,
                        <orig reg="but">put</orig> his love to the <hi rend="underline">new
                        confederacy</hi> was <hi rend="underline">sweeter</hi> than death.</p>

                <p><orig reg="There">Thare</orig> is <orig reg="eleven">eleaven</orig> Hundred
                    Alabamians &amp; with them two of my <orig reg="Uncles">Oncles</orig>, John
                    &amp; William <pb n="3"/> Mosley. I see them almost every day they are <orig
                        reg="both">poth</orig> very lively. <orig reg="Uncle">Oncle</orig> William
                    &amp; my self was on duty night before last we <orig reg="were">ware</orig>
                    speaking of our post I told him I had the <orig reg="best">pest</orig> post on
                    the round &amp; he said he had the <orig reg="best">pest</orig> for a lady
                    sent his supper out to him &amp; that he would be back <orig reg="there"
                        >thare</orig> for his <orig reg="breakfast">breckfast</orig>. I told him
                    that I would relieve him <orig reg="but">put</orig>
                    <orig reg="neither">nether</orig> one got our meals <orig reg="there"
                    >thare</orig>.</p>

                <p><orig reg="There">Thare</orig> is two thousand <orig reg="Mississippians"
                        >Missippians</orig>
                    <orig reg="here">hear</orig>
                    <orig reg="they">thay</orig> are keen for a fight <orig reg="they">thay</orig>
                    are in favor of going to Washington &amp; give the republicans a round or
                    so. The north must keep <orig reg="their">thare</orig> feet <orig reg="off">of</orig>
                    <orig reg="of">ove</orig> Virginia soil or <orig reg="there">thare</orig> will
                    be blood shed. All of the Augusta Grays voted <pb n="4"/> for secession <orig
                        reg="but">put</orig> two &amp; they did not vote fifteen or twenty of us
                    was not old enough, <orig reg="but">put</orig> our <abbr expan="Captain"
                    >Capt</abbr> told us to vote if we could &amp; every one of us voted one of
                    our low life men talked like he <orig reg="would">wold</orig> oppose our votes
                    and the gentle man was about to get him self into business he got so bad scared
                    that he went and voted for secession. John is not so lively as he was when at
                    home. My friend James is well you will hear from him before long. Mr Apple told
                    me to send his love to who ever I was writing to I intend to come up to see you
                    before long. I ask an <orig reg="interest">interrest</orig> in your prayers that
                    I may hold out <orig reg="faithful">faith full</orig> to the end.</p>
